Coronavirus LIVE Updates: India on Saturday reported its highest single-day spike of 69,878 Covid-19 cases, taking the total count close to 30 lakh. The total death toll stands at 55,794, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said. Earlier, the ministry had said that India has crossed the milestone of 1 million Covid-19 tests in a day.
The World Health Organisation, meanwhile, said the world should be able to rein in the coronavirus pandemic in less than two years. KGMU Admin Tests Positive |The entire administration of the KGMU in Lucknow has tested positive for coronavirus. VC Bipin Puri, the Registrar, CMS Shankhawar, MS Ojha and Microbiology head Amita Jain also tested positive.
JMM Chief, Wife Test Positive |Former Jharkhand chief minister and JMM president Shibu Soren and his wife Roopi, along with seven others in their household, have tested positive for COVID-19, say official sources. All of them are undergoing home quarantine. Samples of 29 people in Soren’s household were collected for examination, of which seven were found to have contracted the disease. Soren’s son and Chief Minister Hemant Soren will undertake the test on Monday — third time in two months.
1 More Death in Ladakh |One more person died of COVID-19 in Ladakh, taking the death toll due to the infection in the Union Territory to 19, officials said on Saturday. The death was reported from Kargil district on Friday, the officials said, refusing to reveal any details. Of the total deaths, 12 were reported from Kargil and seven from Leh district, the officials said.

CDC Forecasts up to 2,05,000 Covid-19 Deaths in US by September 12 |The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has forecast up to 2,05,000 coronavirus deaths in the country by September 12. The new national ensemble forecast issued on Friday predicted that 3,700 to 9,600 new Covid-19 deaths will be reported during the week ending September 12, and that 1,87,000 to 2,05,000 overall fatalities will be reported by that date. The states with the highest likelihood of a decrease over the next four weeks include Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina, according to the CDC.

Addressing a virtual press briefing from Geneva on Friday, the WHO chief said that the Spanish flu of 1918 had also taken two years to overcome, but current advances in technology could enable the world to halt the Covid-19 pandemic ‘in a shorter time’. Nepal to Resume Int’l Flights from Sept 1 |The Nepal government has decided to resume international flights from September 1 after nearly six months, says a Cabinet Minister. Nepal had suspended international flights on March 22 in an effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. The country had earlier planned to resume the services from August 17, but it was extended till August 31 amid the resurgence of coronavirus cases.
